End of the Week News and Notes

Good afternoon Room 106 parents,

This week in math, we worked on understanding equivalent fractions and began working on comparing fractions with different numerators. Next week, we will continue focusing on comparing fractions with different denominators. Students have been working hard and making great progress on their understanding of fractions. In literacy, we continued learning about biographies, reading about Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the beginning of the Special Olympics, as well as about Amelia Earhart. Next week we will begin studying fairy tales and working on our summarization skills. In science, we continued learning about trait selection, this time examining dog breeds and how certain dogs have been cross-bred to create new breeds that combine traits from both parent dogs. In social emotional learning, we focused on active listening, and what to do when we realize we’ve lost our focus.

NOTES:
* No homework this weekend, but March Reading Logs are due on Friday
* No Student Attendance on Tuesday due to voting in the building
* Spring Break is next week. Students return to class on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Have a great weekend!

End of Week News and Notes

 Good afternoon and Happy March!

This week in math, we continued our work on fractions. For anyone struggling at home, please know that we will keep working on fractions for awhile, and many students are finding the work challenging. However, the lessons in class mirror the homework, so students should have an understanding of what they are being asked to do, and if they are confused, they should be asking questions in class. Please encourage your student to advocate for themselves when they are confused - I’m here to help! In literacy, we continued working on poetry, identifying themes and the author’s purpose or intent with the words they use. In writing, students drafted their final persuasive letters using their best penmanship (or at least I asked them to) and properly formatting their letter. If your student wrote their letter to you, then they will be bringing it home next week. Please review it with them and let them know how persuasive it was and what you think of their reasoning. Finally in science, we began our “Fates of Traits” unit, which explores how human beings have modified plants based on our knowledge of how plants inherit their traits. We will continue this work into next week.

There is no homework this weekend, but I encourage students to doing some reading to get a head start on their reading log! (See below)

NOTES:
* Trimester 2 report cards are available today on Power School. If your student receives any related services at school, please check their home folder as updates and other paperwork were sent home today. If you need help logging into PowerSchool to view grades, please contact the tech department for help.

* On that note, many students had some overflowing home folders. Most are old papers I’ve returned to students, but please take a minute to review and clean those papers so we can start fresh for the new trimester.

* This month, instead of a book report, students will be completing a reading log to keep track of their independent reading. This reading log should stay at home until students have completed their reading minutes for the month or Friday, March 22nd (the last day before spring break).

That’s all for now! Have a nice weekend!

End of Week News and Notes

Good afternoon!

This week in Room 106 in math, we continued our work on fractions, specifically finding and labeling fractions on a number line. This was quite tricky for a good number of students. We will continue working on fractions next week, but if you find your student is struggling with the homework, please have them set it aside and I will review it with them in class the next day. In literacy, we have another mini-poetry unit, this time focusing on theme, and how we can identify the theme of a text (or a movie or a song). In writing, student began brainstorming their topics for their persuasive essays. Some students are thinking about writing elected leaders about how to fix our country’s/city’s problems, some are thinking about writing to Principal Gage about what they think should change at school, and some are thinking about writing to you about something personal that might want (like a pet or device). The main focus of this activity is to establish solid reasoning behind their request in order for their writing to be persuasive. In social studies, we are wrapping up our unit on community and immigration, and we will be starting our next science unit next week.

NOTES:
* There is no homework this weekend aside from any students who have yet to complete their February book reports. Those need to be completed by Monday as the Trimester ended today and grades are due into Power School immediately.

* Next week’s spelling is a “FUN” spelling week where students each got to select a word for the list. I organized the words by difficulty. All students will be graded on the first 10 words. If your student has a good handle on those words, they should see if they can learn the next 9 words (some are countries) as a challenge.

* Finally, last week we began using our Volume 2 math workbooks, and each student should have brought home their Volume 1 workbooks. There are still plenty of pages in the first book that we didn't complete, including the end of unit reviews, which I think are great for students to complete for summer math work to stay sharp. Feel free to use the books or recycle them.

That’s all for now. Have a great weekend!

End of Week News and Notes

 Good afternoon Room 106 parents!

This week in math, we finished our unit on bar graphs and picture graphs. Students did excellent work this week and the quiz scores were generally very high. I hope we can carry this momentum into next week when we start fractions. In literacy, we read informational and expository texts regarding wolves and foxes, and we used these texts to build our “compare and contrast” skills, including using Venn diagrams. In writing, we engaged in a variety of activities to build our writing stamina, such as looking at a picture and describing it in great detail, or crafting creative stories based on what we see in the picture. In social studies, we continued our study of immigration, exploring how immigration brings people of different cultures to our country, and how we benefit from this diversity. Next week our focus will be on how people can improve their communities. Finally, in social emotional learning, we wrapped up our kindness unit by making kindness coupons for people in our lives that we appreciate or who have helped us.

There is no homework this weekend. Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts! (We will have a spelling test next week on Thursday due to the short week, so if your student has been struggling, I recommend they practice the words over the weekend.)

NOTES:
* February Book Reports are due in 2 weeks (2/23). Students are required to complete and turn in the book report form in addition to presenting their report (in class or via Seesaw).

* February 23rd is also the end of Trimester 2. I have let students know about any missing work and assignments, included giving them extra copies.

* Thank you to all of the parents I met with yesterday to discuss their student’s progress. There are still plenty of spots available for next Thursday’s conferences for anyone who hasn’t signed up yet but would like to. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/Room106Conferences

* We are still looking for one more volunteer for next week’s Valentine’s Day party. Please let me know if you are interested!

Have a great weekend!

End of Week News and Notes

 Good afternoon!

We had a great FULL week of school! The weather didn’t always cooperate during recess time, but I’m glad we were able to get back into our weekly routines. In math this week, we continued to work on multi-step word problems. This was a real challenge for a lot of students, as students need to utilize their reading skills in addition to their math skills. One trend I noticed is many students are trying to all of their math in their heads, and I highly encourage all students to write down their work for each step so they don’t get confused trying to juggle all of the numbers in their heads. Next week we will continue word problems before working on reading graphs. In literacy, we are reading realistic fiction, as well as exploring how a narrator’s point of view affects a story. In writing, students have finished their research and rough drafts for the planet project, and should be working on their final posters at home. (Posters are due Wednesday. I can tape them together in class.) In social studies, we are focused on the history of immigration. Many students shared their families’ immigration stories, and we realized that the families in our class come from all over the world from a lot of cool cultures!

There is no homework this weekend, aside from working on planet posters (due Wednesday). In addition, some students still need to complete their January Book Reports (which were due today).

NOTES:

WEEKLY IREADY EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to complete 45 minutes of iReady Math and iReady Reading each week. In addition, students must pass at least 1 lesson in each subject as well. Students are given time in school to complete these minutes, but if a student is behind on their minutes, they are expected to complete the rest for homework. This is a weekly grade and very important for their academic growth.

SPRING CONFERENCES: We will be holding our spring parent-teacher conferences after school on Thursday, February 8th and 15th. Spring conferences are optional, so if you feel good about your student’s work and academic progress, there is no need to schedule a conference. I will reach out to any students and families that I think require a spring conference. LINK: tinyurl.com/Room106Conferences

WINTER GEAR: Finally, quite a few students left their boots and snow pants here today. I brought them all in from the hallway so they will be safe in the classroom, but please remind your students to bring them home every weekend as things to get lost when they stay at school too long.

Have a great weekend!

*** In class over the past week and half, students have been researching their assigned planet in class, completing a graphic organizer and rough draft. Once those were completed, students received a 4 page version of their rough draft that will be stapled/taped together to make one big poster. (I can help assemble the poster at school) Work on the poster will be done at home. Students will already have all the information they need to complete the posters, they will just need to write their work nicely on the final draft and then color their posters with care and effort. This should take one or two nights, but I gave students until next Wednesday in case they hadn't finished their book report yet. I'm excited to see what the students come up with!
