End of Week News and Notes

Good afternoon!

This week in Room 106 in math, we continued our work on fractions, specifically finding and labeling fractions on a number line. This was quite tricky for a good number of students. We will continue working on fractions next week, but if you find your student is struggling with the homework, please have them set it aside and I will review it with them in class the next day. In literacy, we have another mini-poetry unit, this time focusing on theme, and how we can identify the theme of a text (or a movie or a song). In writing, student began brainstorming their topics for their persuasive essays. Some students are thinking about writing elected leaders about how to fix our country’s/city’s problems, some are thinking about writing to Principal Gage about what they think should change at school, and some are thinking about writing to you about something personal that might want (like a pet or device). The main focus of this activity is to establish solid reasoning behind their request in order for their writing to be persuasive. In social studies, we are wrapping up our unit on community and immigration, and we will be starting our next science unit next week.

NOTES:
* There is no homework this weekend aside from any students who have yet to complete their February book reports. Those need to be completed by Monday as the Trimester ended today and grades are due into Power School immediately.

* Next week’s spelling is a “FUN” spelling week where students each got to select a word for the list. I organized the words by difficulty. All students will be graded on the first 10 words. If your student has a good handle on those words, they should see if they can learn the next 9 words (some are countries) as a challenge.

* Finally, last week we began using our Volume 2 math workbooks, and each student should have brought home their Volume 1 workbooks. There are still plenty of pages in the first book that we didn't complete, including the end of unit reviews, which I think are great for students to complete for summer math work to stay sharp. Feel free to use the books or recycle them.

That’s all for now. Have a great weekend!

End of Week News and Notes

 Good afternoon Room 106 parents!

This week in math, we finished our unit on bar graphs and picture graphs. Students did excellent work this week and the quiz scores were generally very high. I hope we can carry this momentum into next week when we start fractions. In literacy, we read informational and expository texts regarding wolves and foxes, and we used these texts to build our “compare and contrast” skills, including using Venn diagrams. In writing, we engaged in a variety of activities to build our writing stamina, such as looking at a picture and describing it in great detail, or crafting creative stories based on what we see in the picture. In social studies, we continued our study of immigration, exploring how immigration brings people of different cultures to our country, and how we benefit from this diversity. Next week our focus will be on how people can improve their communities. Finally, in social emotional learning, we wrapped up our kindness unit by making kindness coupons for people in our lives that we appreciate or who have helped us.

There is no homework this weekend. Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts! (We will have a spelling test next week on Thursday due to the short week, so if your student has been struggling, I recommend they practice the words over the weekend.)

NOTES:
* February Book Reports are due in 2 weeks (2/23). Students are required to complete and turn in the book report form in addition to presenting their report (in class or via Seesaw).

* February 23rd is also the end of Trimester 2. I have let students know about any missing work and assignments, included giving them extra copies.

* Thank you to all of the parents I met with yesterday to discuss their student’s progress. There are still plenty of spots available for next Thursday’s conferences for anyone who hasn’t signed up yet but would like to. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/Room106Conferences

* We are still looking for one more volunteer for next week’s Valentine’s Day party. Please let me know if you are interested!

Have a great weekend!
