End of Week News and Notes

 Good afternoon!

We had a great FULL week of school! The weather didn’t always cooperate during recess time, but I’m glad we were able to get back into our weekly routines. In math this week, we continued to work on multi-step word problems. This was a real challenge for a lot of students, as students need to utilize their reading skills in addition to their math skills. One trend I noticed is many students are trying to all of their math in their heads, and I highly encourage all students to write down their work for each step so they don’t get confused trying to juggle all of the numbers in their heads. Next week we will continue word problems before working on reading graphs. In literacy, we are reading realistic fiction, as well as exploring how a narrator’s point of view affects a story. In writing, students have finished their research and rough drafts for the planet project, and should be working on their final posters at home. (Posters are due Wednesday. I can tape them together in class.) In social studies, we are focused on the history of immigration. Many students shared their families’ immigration stories, and we realized that the families in our class come from all over the world from a lot of cool cultures!

There is no homework this weekend, aside from working on planet posters (due Wednesday). In addition, some students still need to complete their January Book Reports (which were due today).

NOTES:

WEEKLY IREADY EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to complete 45 minutes of iReady Math and iReady Reading each week. In addition, students must pass at least 1 lesson in each subject as well. Students are given time in school to complete these minutes, but if a student is behind on their minutes, they are expected to complete the rest for homework. This is a weekly grade and very important for their academic growth.

SPRING CONFERENCES: We will be holding our spring parent-teacher conferences after school on Thursday, February 8th and 15th. Spring conferences are optional, so if you feel good about your student’s work and academic progress, there is no need to schedule a conference. I will reach out to any students and families that I think require a spring conference. LINK: tinyurl.com/Room106Conferences

WINTER GEAR: Finally, quite a few students left their boots and snow pants here today. I brought them all in from the hallway so they will be safe in the classroom, but please remind your students to bring them home every weekend as things to get lost when they stay at school too long.

Have a great weekend!

*** In class over the past week and half, students have been researching their assigned planet in class, completing a graphic organizer and rough draft. Once those were completed, students received a 4 page version of their rough draft that will be stapled/taped together to make one big poster. (I can help assemble the poster at school) Work on the poster will be done at home. Students will already have all the information they need to complete the posters, they will just need to write their work nicely on the final draft and then color their posters with care and effort. This should take one or two nights, but I gave students until next Wednesday in case they hadn't finished their book report yet. I'm excited to see what the students come up with!
